This two-story pagoda was erected in 1223 by Hojo Masako, wife of Minamoto no Yoritomo, to receive the ashes of her husband and son. It is the oldest in Koyasan. It is classified as a National Treasure and is also on the Unesco World Heritage List. Its lower roof is curved at the ends and the rest of the building is pyramid-shaped. The structure was built with the wood of Japanese cypress trees, the hinoki.
