KONGŌBU-JI
This Buddhist temple was built in the 16th century by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a great lord, in memory of his late mother. The monastery was often burned down and was last rebuilt in 1869 in combination with another monastery. It is known for its 16th-century paintings executed by the Kan school of Kyōto. It is currently the administrative headquarters of all 117 Koyasan temples and Shingon Buddhism. It is also home to the largest stone garden in the Archipelago, the Banryu-tei. Originally, the temple referred to the whole area.
