BASILICA DELLA SANTISSIMA TRINITÀ DI SACCARGIA
Basilica among the most famous Romanesque-Pisan churches of Sardinia
Its tall, dark bell tower rises up from a green valley. Seeing it from afar causes a first shock, followed by endless emotions when, after a slight slope, the portico and the façade emerge. Leaving the state road 131 to join the Sassari-Olbia road, after a kilometer, the Basilica of the Holy Trinity, masterpiece of Romanesque architecture in Sardinia, appears. Its haughty perfection and its bichromatic dress make it similar to the contemporary Umbro-Tuscan churches. Its imposing mass, raised on a rocky spur, dominates the plain of Saccargia, in the territory of Codrongianos.
The basilica is one of the most famous Romanesque-Pisan churches of Sardinia, if not the most famous. Consecrated in 1116, it belonged to a great Camaldolese monastic complex. The facade is constituted by ashlars of clear limestone alternating with dark basalt. It is divided into two rows of arcades decorated with circular inlaid decorations and colored ceramics. Inside, in the bareness of the space, stands out a superb fresco exalting the life of Christ and whose conservation is remarkable.
The physiognomy of the building was only touched up belatedly by a restoration at the beginning of the 20th century. The visit is particularly interesting on the Sunday after Pentecost, when the Trinity of Saccargia is celebrated with religious rites, folkloric shows and poetry competitions.
