NURAGHE DI SANTU ANTINE
One of the most important nuraghes of the island located near the village of Torralba
Located near the village of Torralba, it is one of the most important nuraghes of the island. It symbolizes the apogee of the architecture of the Nuraghic period. The beginning of its construction goes back to the Middle Bronze Age (about XV century BC). Made of blocks of trachyte, it consists of a main tower of three floors that rises to 17.50 m high. It is surrounded by a powerful bastion with a walkway and corridors that face, in part, the inner courtyard where the well is located. The changes made to their structure in the 2nd century allow to attest that the site was occupied until the Roman period. A villa was even added to the south of the village. The site has only been partially explored and could reveal other surprises. The archaeologists were able to reconstitute a part of the nuraghe of Santu Antine from its remains. The modellings are particularly impressive. The central tower stood in the center of a courtyard and was surrounded by three massive towers that were connected by a thick defensive wall. This tower was originally 25 m high. The main entrance to the nuraghe was through a door in the south wall, which gave direct access to the courtyard. Only the first two floors of the central keep are still accessible. Each room has a tholos ceiling. The artifacts found on this site are exposed in the museum of Torralba. This nuraghe is for us the most beautiful and the best preserved of the island. The visit is moving and striking!
