Along the historic streets of Waki-machi, dating back to the Edo period, the visitor discovers the urban landscape of Udatsu, udatsu meaning a firewall at the edge of the roof. These beautiful traditional houses and warehouses have additional walls made of clay-rich earth around them, designed in part to prevent the spread of fires. To protect the architectural character of the neighbourhood, the government has designated it as an important preservation area for groups of historic buildings.
