Tanshu-Kannonji Temple was founded in 720 by the monk Hodo. In 961, Master Kuya built the seven buildings of the temple there. The place became the center of Kannon beliefs in the Tamba region. Today there are about 3,600 writings and teachings remaining, designated as cultural properties of Kyoto Prefecture. The temple is also known as the 'Hydrangea Temple'. From June to July, there are more than 10,000 flowers of 100 different species. The fourth Sunday in June is the "Hydrangea Festival".
