San Fernando, shaped like a horseshoe, is one of the most beautiful fortifications in the city
In order to protect the passage of Bocachica, two fortresses were erected on either side of the bay: San Fernando, equipped with long-range weapons that could reach the masts of enemy ships, and San José, equipped with short-range weapons pointed at the waterline of ships. Between the two, a heavy copper chain bars the access of the bay to the ships! Shaped like a horseshoe, San Fernando is with its arches one of the most beautiful fortifications of the city.
