GRANDE CASCADE DE L'UNA

This waterfall (Veliki Vodopad na Uni) is less spectacular than the waterfalls of Štrbački buk. It is nevertheless very beautiful with the Una which makes here a succession of falls on 54 m height just next to the village of Martin Brod. Thanks to a wooden footbridge financed by the European Union, one can enjoy a beautiful panorama of this ensemble composed of water, rocks and lush vegetation. Downstream, an old abandoned mill completes the decor. If you follow the path in the opposite direction, then turn left into the "main street", you will come to a suspension bridge for pedestrians that spans the Una River and allows you to admire another series of waterfalls. The street continues to the Martin Brod railway station, where traffic has been stopped since 2010. Established in 1948, the narrow-gauge railway line from Bihać to Knin (61 km), Croatia, was notably used by the dreaded Krajina Express, an armored train of the Serbian Krajina Army that plagued the region between 1991 and 1995, before ending up at the bottom of a ravine. However, the line could reopen in the coming years after renovation. That's good, because its zigzagging route over the border offers a fabulous journey along the Una. In the meantime, Martin Brod has some great walking opportunities, like the one leading to the two abandoned tunnels 700 m east of the Rmanj monastery. Carved into the rock to make way for a road that was never completed along the Una, they have become the haunt of bats.
