This winery (Дечанска Виница/Dečanska Vinica, Veraria e Deçanit) belongs to the Serbian Orthodox monastery of Dečani, located near Peja/Peć. Founded in the 14th century, it is the oldest wine production site still operating in Kosovo. The complex consists of buildings constructed from the Middle Ages until the 18th century. One of the buildings is the St. Typhon's Chapel, which, according to Orthodox tradition, is dedicated to the protector of winegrowers. The Serbian winegrowers of the region gather here every February 14 for the feast of their patron saint (Vinovdan). The chapel also serves as a storage place for icons, liturgical objects and frescoes from nearby churches destroyed since 1998. But the complex is primarily a place of work. The monks of Dečani, assisted by winemakers from the village, produce some of Kosovo's most renowned wines here, such as Manastirsko Dečansko, a fruity and intense red wine made from cabernet sauvignon, merlot and vranac. Before the war, the monastery had 160 ha of vineyards. But most of the vines were burned and are now occupied by Albanian winemakers. The monks keep 4 ha. With the purchase of grapes from the harvesters of Velika Hoča, the monastery manages to produce about 50,000 liters of wine per year which is used for the divine liturgy (Eucharist), but is mostly sold in Serbian Orthodox monasteries in Kosovo and at good wine shops in Serbia.
