FROGMORE COTTON PLANTATION & GINS
Unique venue offering six tours, all for groups at Frogmore
More than 700 hectares of cotton (harvested in September for photos or to take away a stuffing), authentic cypress buildings (a church, the barn with the machines, cabinets and a dozen cabins) and machinery still in use make the Frogmore plantation a rather unique place. Indeed, the plantations of the time still in activity are increasingly rare. In this one, you will be able to see (under the window) the original edition of Twelve Years a Slave, the memoirs of Solomon Northup from which the recent blockbuster of the same name by Steve McQueen was made, a book offered to Lynette Tanner (owner and passionate guide) by a faithful visitor. The visit is very instructive, and insists notably on the daily life of the slaves at the time, the abolition of their condition as well as the aftermath, when there was no other choice than to work by default on the same plantation. A short video introduces the one-hour visit with French subtitles.
Six tours are offered, some of them only for groups. For individuals, there is a choice between "Cotton from yesterday to today" (the classic tour), "The plantation at the time of the Civil War" and "Modern times at the plantation". For groups, there are also "Christmas on the Plantation" and "Music of the Mississippi Delta" tours, as well as a package for school groups. Bonus: from July to April, you can pick cotton yourself!
