CHITIMACHA MUSEUM
Museum dedicated to the Chitimachas tribe, who today are represented in many trades
Museum entirely dedicated to the Chitimachas tribe. After battling with the French, they signed a peace treaty in 1718. When the Acadians arrived in 1762, the tribe assimilated with this new population and spoke Cajun French. But diseases imported from Europe decimated this people, and the government paid little attention to them in 1803 during the Louisiana Purchase. After a very long fight for their social and political recognition, the tribe was officially recognized in 1919. Today, the Chitimachas are represented in many professions.
