PRECETTORIA DI SANT'ANTONIO DI RANVERSO
Impressive abbey and hospital preserving the influence of the French Gothic style
This impressive abbey and its adjoining hospital are located along the famous Via Francigena. From 1188, the Order of Saint-Antoine de Vienne, supported by the House of Savoy, was in charge of assisting the numerous pilgrims coming from France (or transiting through France) and going to Rome. Later, the Order of Saint-Maurice took over the management of the site, which is still in use today. Artistically, the complex is a perfect example of the influence of the French Gothic style, a real curiosity in Piedmont, not to be missed. The abbey, which is superb, also conserves an important cycle of paintings by Giacomo Jaquerio, a great master from Turin, representative of a painting trend that has been called "International Gothic", that is, late Gothic, at the time of the first impulses of the Renaissance in Italy. The maestro worked in this abbey for a large part of his life, certainly between 1410 and 1430, to produce masterful paintings that are undoubtedly his strongest and most accomplished works. One can admire, among other frescoes: the Virgin on her throne surrounded by the saints, scenes from theHistory of the life of Saint Blaise, of course the Passion cycle with the magnificent Ascent to Calvary , his undisputed masterpiece, but also the Four EvangeliststheOration in the garden..
