LAGUNA BRAVA
One of 60 lagoons, with turquoise waters set against a backdrop of vegetation-covered rock faces.
Named Yolnabaj, this magnificent lagoon is part of a group of 60 lakes, lagoons and cenotes - from the Mayan word for "sacred well" - spread between the northwest of Guatemala and part of Chiapas, Mexico. Sublime, the waters sometimes turquoise are in a setting of rocky walls covered with abundant vegetation, characteristic of the Altiplano. The whole constitutes an enchanting landscape, which seems drawn from the imagination. You can see wild pigs, migratory birds, armadillos, deer, and even oncillas - spotted cats.
