KEF ENNSOURA
Reaching an altitude of 713 meters, Kef Ennsoura (word for eagle's nest) is the highest point not only in the Dahar region, but in the whole of south-eastern Tunisia. This altitude offers superb views over the entire Dahar plateau and the Gulf of Gabès. Due to its altitude and the maritime influence of the Gulf of Gabès, Kef Ennsoura enjoys a relatively humid microclimate (average annual rainfall 220 mm), unlike the rest of the Dahar, which is particularly arid. As a result, its flora is particularly rich: Phoenician juniper and rosemary form a low to medium scrubland, in places quite dense, offering a landscape unique in the Dahar mountains (white or country wormwood, marrube, thyme, rue d'Alep or caper...). In terms of wildlife, hikers will see golden eagles, hoopoes and numerous desert birds (sirli, gangas, owls...). A birdwatcher's paradise! In terms of history, Kef Ennsoura played an important role in the Battle of the Mareth Line during the Tunisian Campaign of the Second World War. The site is home to a number of well-preserved military installations, including trenches, walls, chambers with armoured doors, flak emplacements... Whether you're a hiker, nature lover or heritage enthusiast, a walk around Kef Ennsoura is sure to leave no one indifferent!
