SOUK OF QAISARIYA
Authentic market located in the heart of Al Hofuf's old town, with 400 stores spread over 7,000 m² of sales space.
The Qaisariya Souk is the vibrant heart of the old city of Al Hofuf. It reflects the historical importance of Al Hofuf in terms of trade. Although the date of establishment of this market is not known, some travelers mention it in their writings as early as the beginning of the 19th century. The goods unloaded in the port of Uqaïr took the direction of Al Hofuf before going to supply the markets of the main cities of the peninsula. The market as we know it today dates from 1918. Unfortunately, it burned down in 2010, much to the dismay of the inhabitants. The merchants were relocated in a brand new market built at the gates of the city. Then the municipality was committed to rebuild the old souk to the same. If many merchants have returned to the small stores and narrow alleys of this covered market, it is not the case of all, and many shops remain closed. The souk has 400 stores spread over 7,000 square meters of sales space, making it one of the largest traditional markets in Saudi Arabia. It is also one of the oldest and most authentic. The gate marking the entrance to the souk has been preserved. Along the main street, the alley is pierced with arches and traders let their goods overflow from the stores. It is necessary to get lost in the covered alleys, each sector being specialized in certain goods: women's or men's fashion, fruits and vegetables, incense and perfumes, groceries, etc. Come at the end of the day, when the market comes to life.
