Millions of people gather in Mecca at the beginning of the last month of the Muslim calendar. Pilgrims make seven counter-clockwise circles around the Kaaba, a huge cube covered with a black canopy embroidered with Quranic verses in gold thread. The pilgrimage was initiated by Mohammed as a token of submission to Allah.
