ZAMZAM WELL
This 30-metre-deep well in Mecca is said to have sprung up to save Hagar and her son Ishmael, who were wandering in the desert.
The site of the Kaaba was probably chosen because of its proximity to a source of water, a sign of life, and therefore of the divine, in the harshness of the desert. It is said to have arisen thanks to the angel Djibril (Gabriel in Islam) to save Hagar and her son Ishmael, who were wandering in the desert. The well of Zamzam was dug by hand some twenty meters from the Kaaba. It descends to a depth of 30 metres. Subterranean chambers were built to clear the way for the tawaf of the Kaaba. Washbasins were installed for pilgrims to drink from.
