HEDJAZ RAILWAY STATION
This station is one of the few historic Ottoman-style buildings on the railroad linking Damascus to Medina.
The Hedjaz railway station is one of the few historic Ottoman-style buildings still preserved in Saudi Arabia. The Hedjaz Railway was a project launched by the Ottomans at the turn of the 20th century to link Damascus with Jeddah and the Red Sea, and to transport pilgrims. The Emir of Mecca objected immediately, as the train would compete with his camel caravans. The line finally linked Damascus to Medina in 1908.
