OMAR IBN AL-KHATTAB MOSQUE
Mosque erected at the foot of Marid Castle, with a style reminiscent of the original mosque in Medina.
This mosque erected at the foot of the castle of Marid is one of the oldest in the north of the Arabian Peninsula. It is attributed to the second rachidoune caliph Omar ibn al-Khattab, while he was going to Jerusalem. The mosque dates back to 638 and its style is close to the original mosque of Medina. Built of stone, it is oriented on an east-west axis and is an almost perfect rectangle of 32 x 18 meters. The minaret of 12,70 meters would be the very first of Islam.
