BASILIQUE DES QUATORZE SAINTS
The Basilica of the Fourteen Saints is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture by Balthasar Neumann.
According to the stories of the time, Jesus appeared to a shepherd in 1445, accompanied by the 14 auxiliary saints. A chapel was built to welcome the pilgrims. In the 18th century, the pilgrimage took on such proportions that it was necessary to give new dimensions to the church. The basilica, designed by Balthasar Neumann (who also built the Residenz in Würzburg), is a masterpiece of Rococo architecture.
The fourteen auxiliary saints are present in the form of statues. They can be distinguished by their respective attributes. Saint Barbara leans on the tower in which she was locked up by her father. Saint Catherine has the wheel of her martyrdom at her feet. Saint Margaret looks at the dragon that appeared to her during her captivity. Saint Arace is represented in armor and wearing a crown of thorns. Saint Denis, bishop of Paris, carries his decapitated head in his hands. Saint Cyriacus is represented with a demon, from which he freed the daughter of the emperor Diocletian. Saint Erasmus, bishop of Antioch, wears the episcopal crosier. Saint Eustace is represented with the stag that appeared to him during a hunt. Saint George is represented as a knight slaying the dragon. Saint Pantaleon has his hands nailed to his skull. Saint Guy (or Saint Vite) has a rooster at his side. Saint Gilles (or Saint Aegis) is represented with a deer. Saint Blaise of Sebaste is recognizable by his bishop's vestments. Saint Christopher carries the baby Jesus on his shoulders.
