ANTELOPE ISLAND STATE PARK
Park for wildlife viewing, swimming and hiking at Antelope Island.
Antelope Island is most of the time a peninsula connected to the mainland by the south with the lake level being very low. The State Park, occupies the majority of its northern part. You will notice that it is by the north and not by the south that the site is accessed through a 11 km long dam. The road that splits the salt lake offers unique panoramas on the smooth and peaceful water plan that clouds reflect and melt into the crystal clear blue. You'll probably want to stop taking a picture where to watch the vintage of the many birds, but don't be surprised by the smell of putrefaction that comes from the banks in times of drought.
Once in the park, one can include:
Observing wildlife. Most of the year, one or more of the three bison herds are visible in the park. The park has the largest public bison herd after Yellowstone Park and the Custer State Park in South Dakota. First inquire about the Visitor Center, which will probably have localized the herds (you may have the opportunity to observe the bison closely but careful not to get too close and avoid sudden movements). There are also over 300 species of birds in the park. Finally, it is rarer, but not impossible, to observe antelopes.
Swimming. Antelope Beach is the best place to swim. The beach is cleaner than elsewhere and showers are available to rinse all the salt accumulated during bathing. To test absolutely, expand and see that with the salt concentration of the lake's waters, we are fleet.
Take a ride. There are many hikes to do in the park. Please inquire about the length and duration of the stay at the Visitor Center. Be careful in summer, with the warmth and lack of trees, it is better to prefer walks early in the morning or in the evening. Among the most beautiful are the Buffalo Point Trail (12 km round), Lakeside Trail (9 km back) or the Frary Peak Trail (10.4 km return) which runs up the top of the peninsula and provides an incredible panorama on the lake.
