CHUTE DE SKAKAVAC
Waterfall with a 98 m high jump, listed as a natural monument, one of the most impressive in the Balkans.
This waterfall (Vodopad Skakavac) is the highest in the country and one of the most impressive in the Balkans. The small Skakavac river makes a 98 m high jump along a limestone cliff, marking the abrupt end of a beautiful plateau dominated by Mount Bukovik (1,534 m above sea level) where it originates. A viewpoint(vidikovac) at the top of the cliff (1 090 m of altitude) offers a very beautiful panorama. Below, a wooden footbridge brings you closer to the waterfall. The place is appreciated by the Sarajevans who come to picnic in summer.
Protected area. Since 2002, the waterfall and a perimeter of 1,430 ha are classified as a "natural monument" (Spomenik Prirode Skakavac). In addition to the dominant white fir, Balkan beech and spruce, there are 1,500 plant species here, 200 of which are rare and/or endemic to the Dinaric Alps. Among them, flowers such as the yellow pimpinella îPancicia serbica), the Dinaric euphrasia(Euphrasia dinarica), the Bosnian lily(Lilium bosniacum) or the Bosnian iris(Iris bosniaca). A few wolves have been spotted, but foxes, wild boars, badgers, hedgehogs and roe deer are much more numerous. In the air, you will see mostly passerines (crested kinglet, common thrush, great tit, black tit). In the rocky areas, watch where you step because the three species of venomous snakes of the country live here: the Orsini viper, the Bosnian viper and, the most dangerous, the horned viper.
