CHEVAUX SAUVAGES DU PLATEAU DE BILE
Agency offering horseback riding at the Mostar Equestrian Center and organizing an excursion to meet the wild horses.
Less numerous and less known than those of Livno, the wild horses of the Bile plateau (Divlji Konji na Bilima) are a new attraction in the region. There are about 150 of them, divided into four herds, living in a karst and semi-desert area, at an altitude of 700-900 m, around Mount Jastrebinka (1,133 m), half an hour by car from Mostar or Široki Brijeg. Like those in Livno, they are the offspring of horses abandoned by farmers since the 1970s. But the animals here are subjected to harsher conditions both because of scarce sources of water and food, difficult climatic conditions and predators, with the presence on the plateau of about 25 wolves hunting foals. In recent years, things have improved a little thanks to an association that has installed watering and feeding troughs. So much so that some tourist agencies have recently started offering guided tours to meet these horses, which are now more accustomed to the presence of humans. This is the case of the agency Ero Travel which organizes every day from May to October a 3 hours excursion from Mostar. On the program: transfer from your hotel (or another determined place) from 9 am, small riding session at the "Mostar equestrian center", in Goranci (Konjički Klub Mostar, www.facebook.com/KKMostar), with tamed horses, then departure to the Bile plateau by car to meet the wild horses.
