FORTERESSE HADŽI-BEY
Medieval fortress at the foot of the Žaba hill, with nine towers, one of which is circular and still stands 12 m high.
This ruined fortress (Hadžibegov Grad) is located at the foot of the hill of Žaba (716 m above sea level). Of medieval origin, it was reinforced by the Ottomans in the 17th century to counter the incursions of the Venetians. In the shape of a pentagon (about 70 × 50 m), it was equipped with nine towers, one of which, circular, still stands at 12 m high. The fortress owes its name to the last officer in charge of it, Hadži Mehmed Bey Rizvanbegović (1768-1832), captain of the Stolac garrison who allied himself with the French in Dubrovnik between 1806 and 1808.
