VALLÉE DE POPOVO POLJE
Valley surrounded by hills, karstic depression following the Trebišnjica from the village of Zavala.
This valley, whose name means "plain of the priest" (Popovo Polje), is a polje, i.e. an area of karstic depression. Surrounded by hills, it extends over 6 km2 following the Trebišnjica from the village of Zavala (where the Vjetrenica cave is located). The river then sinks for the most part under the ground. This is the second time that it disappears like this since its source near Bileća (Trebinje region). Totaling 89 km underground for a total course of 187 km, it is the largest "loss" (partially underground river) in the world.
