MONASTÈRE DE LIPLJE
Elegantly renovated Serbian Orthodox monastery now home to a community of four copyist monks and a nun.
This elegant Serbian Orthodox monastery (Manastir Liplje/Манастир Липље) is said to have been founded by the Serbian king Stefan Dragutin in the 14th century on the site of an 11th-century monastery. Repeatedly destroyed, it was abandoned for two centuries from 1696. Dedicated since the 19th century to the Annunciation of the Mother of God and renovated in 1984, it now houses a community of four copyist monks and a nun. The catholicon does not contain any ancient frescoes, but its 20 m high bell tower makes it one of the highest medieval Serbian churches.
