FORTERESSE DE SOKOGRAD
A fortress with the ruins of a tower, surrounded by vegetation, invites excursions to visit the nearby grotto and valley.
Drowned in vegetation, at 620 m above sea level, and difficult to access by a poorly marked path, this fortress (Tvrđava Sokograd/Тврђава Сокоград) was erected in the early 13th century. In July 1363, it allowed Stefan Tvrtko I to rout the army of his suzerain, King Louis I of Anjou of Hungary, and then to be crowned king of Bosnia. Abandoned by the Ottomans in 1833, it retains only the ruins of a tower. In season, the tourist office of Šipovo organizes day trips with a visit to the cave and the nearby valley.
