NÉCROPOLE DE SMRIKA
Necropolis for victims of Fascism, on a hill 510 m above sea level, commemorating the 700 inhabitants killed there in August 1941.
Located on a hill at 510 m above sea level, this "necropolis of the victims of fascism" (Nekropola Žrtvama Fašizma Smrike) dates back to 1975 and pays tribute to the seven hundred Serbian, Jewish and Roma inhabitants of Travnik killed on this site in August 1941 by the Croatian ustachis. Designed by Serbian architect Bogdan Bogdanović, who is credited with the Yugoslav memorials in Bihać and Mostar, among others, the necropolis consists of twelve 2-3 m high stone blocks decorated with strange creatures with sad eyes and the letter omega (Ω) as a symbol of death.
