The ghost village of Anavatos is established on a steep hillside. It flourished during the Byzantine period, but the inhabitants fell victim to the Ottoman massacre of 1822. The earthquake of 1881 finally drove out the last residents and it has been abandoned ever since. The natural strategic situation of the village and its 400 fortified houses, stuck in a tight row, made it an almost impregnable site, which means anavatos in Greek. Today, one can visit the place, which seems to suddenly emerge from a chaos of stone.
