CASTELLO SVEVO
Rocca Imperiale castle, facing the sea, with its well-preserved curtain walls, towers and parade ground.
The castle of Rocca Imperiale was founded by Emperor Frederick II in the 1220's. Its location facing the sea and along a communication route linking Reggio Calabria to Brindisi was of strategic military interest. The village gradually developed at its feet. The castle passed successively in the hands of the Anjou, the Aragonese, then of various noble families before being bequeathed to the Commune. The curtain walls, the towers, the bastions and the parade ground are well preserved and offer magnificent views over the landscape.
