OJIKA ISLAND

Point 1:

Kominka Stay is major. The old folk houses were renovated into vacation rentals as well as restaurant. This way the cultural heritage of the island is preserved and local economy is supported.

Unlike the bland hotels and very much formal ryokans, our kominka stay has the concept of LIVING on the island. Guests have the whole house to themselves and can relax completely, immersing themselves into the island life.

The houses are gorgeous yet cozy, traditional yet with all the modern comforts. They got renovated under the supervision of Alex Kerr who is a famous Japanologist and East Asia studies expert.

Point 2

We have experiences that allow guests to interact with locals. These include things like cooking with locals, dining with locals, fishing with locals, farming with locals, etc. Ojika’s people are known for their warmth and hospitality. When you walk down the street in Ojika everyone will smile at you, greet you and try chatting with you. If you go pass the field, the farmer will give you vegetables. If you go pass the port, a fisherman will give you fish. Locals always want to give you something that they have.

Of course fresh vegetables and FISH. Best fish you will ever taste.

Point 4

Nature. Ojika is great for travelers who don’t want a hectic trip with lots of sightseeing and shopping. Or those who perhaps do the above first, and then come to Ojika for a break. Ojika trip is, staying in kominka, interacting with locals, and of course relaxing in the nature. It’s a flat island with no mountains so guests usually rent a bicycle and go around the island. There are gorgeous beaches here that will most of the time be private. As in, there isn’t anyone else but you there.

Point 5

30 minutes away on a local ferry is Nozaki Island. It’s the world heritage site with its hidden Christians history. But its unique natural landscape might be the most attractive thing about the island. There are wild deer roaming everywhere too. It’s a great day trip.
