Pyramidal stele, 5 m high, composed of six superimposed Vosges sandstone blocks, and surrounded by 12 small circular markers.
This 5-metre-high pyramid-shaped stele is an impressive vestige of the Napoleonic era. Built in 1804, it is composed of six superimposed Vosges sandstone blocks and is surrounded by 12 small circular markers. It was erected in Oberhergheim at Napoleon's request by astronomer Maurice Henry's team, in order to draw up a map of Helvetia. The distance between this stele and the one in Sausheim was at the time the longest base measured on the surface of the Earth, and served as a triangulation. A third stele should have been erected in Jungholtz.
