Vauban Canal in Oberhergheim, with certain sections used to irrigate agricultural land
In 1697, Louis XIV decided to protect the village of Neuf-Brisach. At the king's request, the engineer Sébastien Le Prestre, Marquis de Vauban, set about building a veritable stronghold. To transport the stones from the Gueberschwihr and Pfaffenheim quarries, the Vauban canal was dug, drawing water from the Quattelbach at Ensisheim and piping it to Oberhergheim. The canal was partially filled in for military purposes by 1703. Some sections still exist, and are used to irrigate farmland.
