KALØ CASTLE RUINS (KALØ SLOTSRUIN)
Strategically placed atop a natural island, this fortified castle offered an unobstructed view of Kalø Vig, Arhus Bay...
Just beyond Rønde, on the road to Ebeltoft, the port of Aarhus can be seen from the sea, with the ruins of the castle in the foreground. Strategically located on top of a natural island, the building offered an unobstructed view of Kalø Vig, Arhus Bay and the surrounding landscape. The future King of Sweden, Gustav Vasa, was held prisoner here in the 16th century, before freeing his country from the Danish yoke. Built in 1313, the castle was demolished in 1672. A long path leads to the castle on foot.
