FORT DE CACHEU
Fort housing several statues of navigators and heroes of the great Portuguese discoveries, such as Nuno Tristão
Erected in 1588 at the request of Cape Verdean Manuel Lopes Cardoso, the Cacheu fort was intended to protect the town from corsair attacks, a regular occurrence in the region. It was also used to control ships entering and leaving the bar, and played an important role in the ivory and slave trades. In addition to the 16 original cannons, the interior features several statues of navigators and heroes of the great Portuguese discoveries, such as Nuno Tristão, who is said to have been the first Portuguese to set foot on Guinea-Bissau soil.
