ÉGLISES DE LESHNICA
8 km from Cerkovica (on foot or by 4 x 4), the Agios Georgios monastery houses the oldest frescoes in Epirus, dating from 1525.
Over 600 m above sea level, in the Theologos valley, Leshnica (Λεσινίτσα/Lesinitsa) is home to around 100 Greek inhabitants spread across several hamlets. Here you'll find a café, but above all plenty of Orthodox churches. In "Leshnica-le-Bas" (Leshnica e Poshtme, Kάτω Λεσινίτσα), the Agios Athaniasos monastery is adorned with frescoes painted in 1801. 2 km to the east, at "Leshnica-le-Haut" (Leshnica e Sipërme, Άνω Λεσινίτσα), the Agios Georgios monastery houses the oldest frescoes in the cross-border region of Epirus, painted in 1525.
