This pretty park in the heart of the city was named after the Bolshevik revolutionary Kirov, whose real name was Sergei Kostrikov, until it was renamed Zhastar Park with a Kazakh name. The statue of Kirov, sent by Stalin to Kazakhstan, still stands in the middle of the garden. Kirov distinguished himself in 1936 by razing the Orthodox church in the park. A small memorial has since been erected on the site of this church: a small wooden chapel, the interior of which is entirely lined with icons.
