The highest point in the Altai Mountains, Mount Beloukha, with its distinctive double peak rising to 4,506 metres, lies on the border between Kazakhstan and Russia and can be approached. Covered in eternal snow, the ridge line forms the backdrop to a vast panorama of alpine meadows, fir trees and rivers. It is part of the national park that bears its name, and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with the "Golden Mountains of Altai" for their exceptional high-altitude vegetation.
