HARRISON'S CAVE ECO-ADVENTURE PARK
Barbados' most popular attraction, these caves are a must-see on any visit to the island. The parish of St. Thomas is known for its many gullies and caves carved out by water erosion of coral rock. Such is the case of these caves, which date back some 60,000 years. These calcium-rich waters eventually created numerous stalactites and stalagmites, almost drop by drop. Although the caves have been mentioned since 1795, it wasn't until the 1970s that they were seriously explored by Ole Sorensen, a Danish speleologist, and Tony Mason, his Barbadian guide. Since then, an entire leisure park has been built around this natural wonder. To discover them, visitors board an electric streetcar that takes them through various rooms: The Great Hall, The Cathedral, The Rotunda... All have evocative names and, in addition to geological formations, there are underground streams, lakes and even a waterfall. In addition to informative commentary, the guides are often very funny. Once back on the surface, you can stroll along an educational trail, The Pride of Barbados, discover its aviary (dispensable in our opinion, poor birds) or relax at the Green Monkey Café. Looking for a thrill? Packages are available to try out the tree climbing course or a zip line over the forest. A little rum at the Mount Gay Experience won't go amiss afterwards.
