MUSEUM-MEMORIAL OF BEŁŻEC
The Holocaust is also about making memory disappear. Here, 500,000 people died in ten months, and nothing remains.
Inaugurated in 2004, this memorial is impressive. It consists of two parts, the camp and the museum. The entrance is located at the railway connection that linked the camp to the Lublin-Rava Rus'ka line. Upon entering, one walks along a road cut into the ground and resembling a crevasse topped with concrete walls that bisects the camp, symbolically covered with debris. The exhibition includes objects found during the excavation of the site, photos and audiovisual documents testifying to the history of the camp and the Nazi extermination policy.
