MONASTÈRE DE MAULBRONN
Located in the northern Black Forest region of Baden-Württemberg, in the heart of the rolling Stromberg landscape, Maulbronn Monastery is simply described as the best-preserved medieval monastery complex in Europe. That alone should entice you to stop by. On site, you can admire the evolution of medieval architectural styles, from the Romanesque to the magnificently preserved late Gothic.
The Cistercian monastery was founded in the 12th century. The monastery's exceptional state of preservation makes it easy to forget its advanced age. Within the estate itself, you'll discover a variety of vegetable and fruit gardens, in keeping with the Cistercian doctrine of self-sufficiency and hard work. Outside the monastery walls, you'll find vineyards and even fish ponds.
Those of you with a sweet tooth will note that the monastery is also famous for being the original home of Maultaschen, the ravioli famous in the region and throughout the country. Legend has it that, during Lent, a monk created the stuffing and wrapped it in dough to hide it from God. Today, this gastronomic specialty is the pride of the Swabians.
Back to the monastery itself. All around the main courtyard, a Romanesque church, a Gothic cloister and its magnificent sheltered fountain.
If you're lucky, during your visit you'll come across one of the many concerts held in the monastery throughout the year. An experience not to be missed.
