Inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1995, the Messel site is an open book for understanding the Eocene period, a geological phase between 57 and 36 million years BC. It was during this period that the first so-called "modern" mammals appeared, and Messel has provided us with some well-preserved fossilized specimens. More than 1,000 species of animals and plants have been found fossilized on site.
