RÉGION MINIÈRE DES MONTS MÉTALLIFÈRES
This important mining region, distinguished by UNESCO, stretches across Germany and the Czech Republic. On the German side, the Erzgebirge massif is located in the state of Saxony, near the town of Freiberg. Exploitation of these mountains' mineral resources goes back 800 years, with the first extractions dating back to the Middle Ages. The region even became Europe's most important source of silver ore for a century from 1460 onwards, leading to major technological and scientific innovations. At the end of the 19th century, the region became a major hub for uranium mining. The surrounding towns were naturally shaped by this industry, and many old mines, ore-processing sites and smelters can be found scattered across the region. On the German side, the UNESCO award covers 17 sites. These include the Dippoldiswalde silver mine, the mining landscapes of Freiberg, Altenberg-Zinnwald, Hoher Forst and Annaberg-Frohnau, the historic center of Marienberg... The sites are numerous, some of them simply landscapes that unfold before your eyes, witnesses to an era and an industry that has long shaped the land, the way of life of the region's inhabitants and the economic development of towns like Marienberg. In Dippoldiswalde, a museum dedicated to medieval mining will add to your knowledge of the subject.
