The town of Herrnhut is famous for having been a refuge for religious refugees from Bohemia and Moravia, welcomed as early as 1722 by the local Count von Zinzendorf. Persecuted in their home regions by the Counter-Reformation, they settled here in architecturally sober colonies, mainly based on the principles of community life. They also developed missionary activities. In July 2024, the town was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
