Two lighthouses stand on the highest point in the region. The oldest dates back to 1881. Built by the engineer Bengut, from whom it takes its name, it was inspired by mosque minarets: a square tower topped by a small green dome. Damaged in 1994 by a bomb attack and then by the 2003 earthquake, it is no longer in working order and has been replaced by a new cylindrical concrete lighthouse, built next door in 2010 and 7 metres taller. This is the only lighthouse to have been built after independence.
