SITE DE L'ANTIQUE AKANTHOS
Small, sheltered archaeological site preserving the remains ( centuries BC) of the acropolis of the city of Akanthos.
This small archaeological site preserves under cover the remains of the city of Akanthos (Αρχαία Άκανθος/Archaia Akanthos) which was founded, like Stagira, by settlers from Andros towards the end of the 7th century BC. A section of wall and columns from the acropolis (6th-3rd centuries BC) can be seen. Traces of the port and necropolis extend right down to the beach. Akanthos was named after the presence of "thorn" plants (akantha) and disappeared in the 2nd century AD.
