Jewish cemetery with old moss-covered tombs, recounting the history of Rixheim's former Jewish inhabitants
A feeling of nostalgia and sadness overcomes us as we discover these old moss-covered graves. We're in Rixheim's Jewish cemetery, just over 200 years old. A date can still be read on one of the silent stones: 1797... While in the newer part of the cemetery, the most recent graves date back a few years. A vestige of another era, this cemetery tells the story of Rixheim's former Jewish inhabitants: a community that was very large at the time, representing almost fifteen percent of the village's population.
