SAINT LOUIS-EISENTHÜR SILVER MINE
The most beautiful Renaissance site in Europe, offering a panorama of mining techniques, with mulled wine tasting
This is one of the most beautiful Renaissance sites in Europe. Opened in 1549 by the monks of Échery, the mine was one of the richest in the Val d'Argent region. It is listed as a historic monument. Over the past 30 years, archeology and mining speleology enthusiasts have explored more than 70 km of galleries and shafts! Asepam invites you to visit a gallery almost 1 km long. Along the way, you'll learn all about mining techniques, from the Renaissance to the present day. What to expect: 5 km by private car to reach the tour site, then allow 3 hours for the tour, including the 30-minute approach walk in the forest. After getting kitted out, the underground adventure lasts about 1 hour. Boots, oilskins and helmets with lighting are provided by ASEPAM. As part of the Ombres et Lumières event in December, the Saint-Louis-Eisenthür site is visited by candlelight. It includes a tasting of mulled wine and tasty bredele (Christmas cookies) at the bottom of the mine! This experience is reserved for those in good physical condition, as the route can be quite rugged. For young people aged 18 and over, a mining heritage enhancement workcamp is organized in the summer (registration required), so you can learn more and spend your summer wisely. In short, there's plenty to do here, and new and unique sensations to try out!
