THE CONVICTS' TRENCH
La Tranchée des Bagnards or Tranchée de Glomel is the highest point of the Nantes canal in Brest. At 180 metres high, it is laid out on the watershed between the catchment area of Blavet and Aulne. Its implementation is a tragic episode of Brittany in the last century. It was dug in the early 19th century by army deserters who bled the hill, transporting great quantities of soil most often in baskets on their backs. Illness and death struck a large part of the 700 malnourished convicts housed in deplorable and precarious conditions. Now, the place is conducive to strolling by bike or a kayak tour.
