COAT FUR WOLF SANCTUARY
Coat Fur wolf sanctuary, the only one of its kind in France, is home to some 20 wolves as well as fallow deer and red deer.
Launched by an association in 2006, this one-of-a-kind facility in France initially housed wolves from the animal trade, seized from private individuals, professionals or placed by animal parks and trainers, before also taking in deer, fallow deer and even a Scottish ox. Today, sixteen to twenty wolves live in the refuge, which is a partner of the Brigitte-Bardot Foundation. Please note that Coat Fur is not a zoo. The wolves live as close as possible to their natural environment, their peace and quiet is preserved as far as possible, and they can only be observed from a distance, so don't forget your binoculars. The refuge offers a one- to two-hour walk where patience is essential. Take your time, sit on the benches and let this discreet but curious animal come to you. The reward of spotting a wolf, even twenty meters away and hidden in the thicket, is hypnotic and well worth the effort. Signs along the way give you a better understanding of their way of life. The refuge, set in the heart of a beautifully wooded and undulating countryside, also features a large covered refreshment bar, offering candlelit dinners every Friday evening in summer (booking required). It's even possible to sleep on site, in a converted yurt. It's the perfect opportunity to spend a special moment with the wolves, either at dinner in front of the enclosure or during a visit with the caretaker, and to hear them howl in the dead of night!
